Extracurricular Activities

Isn't it time to stop suggesting that kids come to school just to participate in extracurricular activities?  I could be wrong, but I have few kids turned on to Algebra 2 by virtue of being on the basketball team.

  1. I don't think kids come to school just to participate in extracurricular activities, but I do think there is a positive domino effect when kids are involved in extracurricular activities -- better academics, better behavior, better attendance, more likely to go to college, etc. Also, I'm puzzled by your example of algebra and the basketball team because I think it's actually very common, especially in IPS, for students who otherwise might blow off college-prep coursework, or school altogether, to be motivated by team sports or the possibility of playing college sports. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you're saying?
